Amidst the breathtaking views from Shore Lodge in McCall, ID, my breakfast with my daughter turned into an unexpected showcase. Framed by picturesque windows, a captivating scene unfolds as a flock of Tundra Swans grace the wintry landscape.
These elegant birds, distinguished by a characteristic whistling in their wings, led Meriwether Lewis to call them “whistling swans,” a name still in use. They migrate from their arctic tundra breeding grounds to the U.S. during winter. Slightly smaller than the Trumpeter Swan, they find refuge on lakes like Payette.
Tundra Swans breed in the remote arctic of North America. The parents are challenged with defending their nests and young against a host of predators including foxes, weasels, wolves, and bears, as well as numerous large birds. Most incubating swans will leave their nests while large predators are far away, making the nest harder to find.
These majestic swans, known for forming lifelong pair bonds, symbolize romance and unity. The age-defying resilience of these creatures is evident, as the oldest recorded Tundra Swan, a female, surpassed 23 years in Ohio.
I’m so thankful I had the opportunity to photograph these resilient, graceful swans in the midst of wintry splendor.
