I love the scenic views from Steptoe Butte in eastern Washington, where warm quartzite bluffs contrast with the soft hills and farmland dotting the countryside below.
On this late afternoon, a little lone tree catches my eye, slightly swayed by the wind, yet remains anchored as a silent witness to the ever-changing canvas of God’s warm light. Rooted firmly in the present, she exudes tranquility, embracing each fleeting shadow with dignified grace.
As the sun descends, casting a warm glow over the rolling Palouse hills, the tree seems content to hang out on her perch, soaking in the golden rays breaking through the dark shifting clouds.
The drive up this narrow, winding road is not without challenge as there are no guardrails, testing both nerves and driving skills. But with each turn in this four-mile ascent, is remarkable scenery and a great reward at the summit—a breathtaking 360-degree panoramic view of this unique landscape.
Steptoe Butte's rich history, named after Colonel Edward Steptoe, adds depth to its significance, with some of the oldest rock in the Pacific Northwest.
In post process, I added a painterly filter for a soft, moody, semi-abstract style. Bathed in soft hues of green, mauve, gold, and contrasty dancing shadows, this scene likens itself to a Tuscany picture.
